Risk and Claim support

Insurance Survey / Investigations

Independent surveys assess condition, investigate damage and its causes, and verify cargo readiness to reduce risk and support insurers and stakeholders.

In addition to surveys relating to vessels, cargo, and ports, INS also offers a range of non-marine, land-based inspections. Our expertise extends to transport, cargo handling, fire investigations, and other specialised technical fields.

We also specialise in the inspection and survey of pleasure craft, ranging from small boats and jet skis to mega and giga yachts.

TECHNICAL DUE DILIGENCE

Damage Surveys

Damage surveys investigate the history of a case and determine the extent and cause of the damage. We also assist in identifying practical solutions to reduce costs and provide support to the insured where required.

Damage accident investigations:

  • Investigate history
  • Premises
  • Determine extent and amount and cause of damage
  • Take measurements to reduce costs and salvage
  • Assign responsibility and invite other parties to complete the assessment
  • Follow-up and recovery
  • Authority liaison
  • International accreditation

Condition & evaluation surveys

risk and value assessment

Condition & evaluation surveys

Condition and evaluation surveys provide an independent assessment of a vessel, object, or premises. These inspections are usually conducted according to a standard or extended checklist to ensure a comprehensive review.

Risk Assessment and Prevention

  • Prior to insurance — or during the policy period — the insured vessel or object may undergo a survey to determine its condition and assess safety and risk factors.
  • As independent appraisers and valuers, we are able to determine the value of ships, yachts, or other insured objects within the scope of our expertise. Regular valuations help avoid over- or under-insurance.
  • A risk inventory and recommendations are compiled to reduce the likelihood of future claims. To maintain accurate oversight, these surveys are ideally conducted at regular intervals.

Cargo Pre-Shipment & Follow-Up Surveys

Cargo pre-shipment and follow-up surveys often help prevent damage by ensuring that all parties involved comply with the required procedures before shipment. In the unfortunate event of a claim, we already have a clear record of the circumstances from the beginning.

TOW warranty survey

Intending to relocate a vessel, pontoon, or offshore structure under tow?

A tow warranty surveyor shall assist in determining the condition and confirming that the operation can be carried out safely and responsibly. It is recommended to contact the surveyor at an early stage. We are recognised as a marine warranty surveyor by numerous leading insurance underwriters. Our tow surveys include detailed evaluation of:

  • Seaworthiness of both the towing vessel and the object to be towed.
  • Integrity of watertight compartments, hatches, and closing appliances.
  • Towing gear, bridles, shackles, and connection points.
  • Stability calculations for the vessel or object in the towed configuration.
  • Weather routing and passage planning considerations.
  • Compliance with applicable regulations governing towage operations.
  • Bollard pull verification and suitability of the towing arrangement.
  • Guidance on risk mitigation relating to piracy and stowaway concerns.
  • Issuance of the Tow Survey / Warranty Certificate once all conditions conform for departure.

We confirm that the vessel or structure is correctly prepared for departure, reducing the likelihood of water ingress, structural failure, or loss during transit. The surveyor shall follow up the sailing and assist when required.
